Saving Bucks on Food

Postby chryslernz » Wed Jun 09, 2010 2:06 pm

I've learned so many things at home especially about saving bucks on food. If I have old fruits at home such as apples and oranges, I'll never throw it away because it's still useful. I make my own jam made from old fruits instead of buying jam in the store. In this way, I can save cents. How about you? What are your ways of saving?

That sounds good chrys. I have always shopped by comparing prices from one shop to another. Of course when you do that you have to take into consideration the price of petrol that it takes to get to the shop if it's further from your residence. I am considering growing a small veg garden next summer as a way to get some fresh veggies and I'm thinking of investing in some fruit trees to have a fresh source of fruit.

I hit the stores that have the sales. I price match, bring in the coupons and buy store brands instead of the advertised brands. I pay for food, not the packaging.

What about a compost heap for those things that do go bad or start to do so? I know a few friends of mine with horse on the land will either feed their fruits to the horses for an extra treat or if its bad, it gets tossed in the compost heap.

I have a compost bin. I use it quite often for all of our vegetable scraps. When we peel potatoes we throw those in and when we have fruit that's gone off it goes in too. I also add horse manure to the mix but that's the disgusting part.

That's disgusting but healthy LOL. What a paradox.

I agree with Carrotsarebleh about growing a small vegetable garden. You don't even need to have soil space as you can grow the vegetables in pots or other media using the verticulture system.

I try to save money when shopping for food by looking for bargains. At the same time I want to eat healthy and sometimes that is not cheap. I find some things you can buy at a bargain and other things you need to get full price.
